California in 1851-52

This project is taken from a series of letters published by Louise Clappe in the mid-19th century. She lived in the goldfields of the Sierra foothills with her husband, a doctor in one of the mining camps. She wrote about her experiences under the pseudonym Dame Shirley in the form of letters to her sister. They initially appeared in the Pioneer, California Monthly Magazine from 1854-1855.

The typographic challenge was to create a text style that complemented the letter format. This was accomplished with well formed rag right text and use of italics through heading and paragraph lead-ins. The text includes small sections of verse.
